Axe-wielding man has Highland Park neighborhood on edge Some Highland Park residents are on edge after an axe-wielding man, who lives in a nearby homeless encampment, has been seen roaming the streets and destroying the sense of safety in their neighborhood.  Video shows the man attempting to cut down a tree in the front yard of one of the homes with his axe. According to the homeowner, the man also has a drum set that he sometimes uses to make noise at all hours of the day and night. “As a woman, I’m worried about walking through my neighborhood because I don’t know what kind of mood he’ll be in and I know that he’s armed,” the homeowner, identified only as Tracy, told KTLA.  A new mom, Tracy says she’s constantly worried about the safety of her family and has called the city’s 311 hotline dozens of times but has not received any help.  Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who represent the neighborhood responded to KTLA’s request for comment with a statement that read in part: “We want to ensure that everyone in CD1 – ...

Chemical investigation underway in West Los Angeles; fire crews on scene Crews with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to Rancho Park Monday night after receiving reports of an “oil-like” substance seeping up from the ground, authorities said.  Calls about the incident, located in the 2800 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard, came in just before 6 p.m., according to an LAFD news release.  A portion of Sepulveda Boulevard under the 405 Freeway has been closed as a result of the cleanup and investigation. West Oakland double shooting under investigation OAKLAND — Police were at the scene of a double injury shooting at a West Oakland apartment complex, authorities said Wednesday.Around 10:10 p.m., officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1300 block of Seventh Street east of Mandela Parkway, authorities said.When officers arrived, they found two unconscious and unresponsive victims suffering from gunshot wounds to the chests. First responders who also arrived provided treatment before taking the victims to a hospital. Their conditions were not available Monday night.Investigators did not share any information about a possible suspect or associated vehicle description.For information leading to the arrest of a suspect, police are offering up to $5,000 in each shooting. Oakland police detective charged with perjury, bribing homicide case witness, court records say OAKLAND — A longtime Oakland police detective has been hit with multiple felony charges including perjury, bribery and threatening a witness related to a homicide case he investigated, records filed Monday show.Officer Phong Tran was charged with five felony counts including two counts of perjury, and bribery of a witness, attempted bribery of a witness and subornation of perjury under oath, according to court papers filed by the District Attorney’s Office.The crimes Tran is suspected of span from 2012 to 2016. Kwixuan Maloof, director of the DA’s Public Accountability Bureau established by District Attorney Pamela Price, filed the charges on Monday. The DA’s office, as first reported by KTVU, also issued a no-bail arrest warrant for Tran.As previously reported by this news organization, Tran has been under scrutiny after a murder case against two men was thrown out last month. NOPD search for MMA's Nate Diaz who is accused of causing an altercation over the weekend NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department is seeking to arrest professional MMA fighter Nate Diaz as he is accused of causing a large fight on Bourbon Street over the weekend. At about 2:10 a.m. on Saturday (April 22), officers responded to the 400 block of Bourbon St. where they witnessed a large crowd. Once everyone dispersed, the NOPD says they found a man unconscious on the scene. When he woke up, that's when officers noticed he was bleeding from the back of his head. The man was treated on the scene by EMS.Investigations into the incident lead to a warrant being issued for the arrest of professional MMA fighter Nate Diaz who faces a charge of second-degree battery.
