AUSTIN (KXAN) — "Cops are those individuals others look to solve problems and protect persons in need. Weakness is not seen as an option and therefore, they will often refuse to acknowledge their own internal struggles," an online obituary stated. That obituary was written for a Texas police officer who took his own life last year on Dec. 2. The following day on Dec. 3, a second Texas police officer from a different law enforcement agency also died by suicide. Both officers were in their 40s and had been with their departments for over 15 years. The unfortunate deaths of these two officers were brought to KXAN's attention by an anonymous source who wanted to bring awareness to how one Texas police chief honored the officer they lost and acknowledged the importance of mental health in their profession. Chief Jeff Bryan has been with the Garland Police Department for almost 27 years. Bryan said this was the first officer who died by suicide since he's been with Garland PD. The legislative committee tasked with helping to guide Colorado’s response to substance use has reconvened for the first time in four years to face a drastically changed drug landscape, a worsened overdose crisis and a series of worrisome data points about the state’s patchwork treatment system. The Opioid and Other Substance Use Disorders Study Committee — featuring six Democrats and four Republicans from the state legislature — met for the first time Thursday and will meet again over the coming months with the goal of forwarding potential bills to the full General Assembly when it reconvenes in January. The group had met for three straight years through 2019, but COVID-19’s emergence derailed its schedule. The committee returns now not only near the peak of the state’s drug crisis, but also amid internal divisions within the legislature about how to address the issue. In what amounted to a state of the state’s drug use, the committee’s ...Cooking with a gas stove in your home is like living with a smoker, new research conducted in Denver finds

Cooking with a gas stove in your kitchen can emit as much benzene into a home as second-hand tobacco smoke, depending on ventilation and the size of the house, according to new research from Stanford University conducted in part in metro Denver. The findings showed the benzene produced when a gas stove is ignited migrated through homes — including into bedrooms that were the furthest from the kitchen — and reached levels above acceptable health benchmarks, said Yannai Kashtan, the lead researcher and a Ph.D. candidate at Stanford’s Earth Systems Science Department.“I’m surprised, not so much that we found benzene, but just how much we found,” Kashtan said.Researchers studied 87 homes in California and Colorado to determine how much benzene a gas stove released when in use and to look at how it spread throughout a house. They chose to study homes in the Denver area because of its proximity to a sizable oil and gas industry and because it was within drivin...Rum-focused cocktail bar opens in Cherry Creek with mojitos, pina coladas and daiquiris

Q: The unprotected left turn off the southbound Interstate 280 exit onto Foothill Boulevard remains one of the most dangerous exits in the Bay Area.I know they’ve had trouble deciding on the right solution. I was wondering if, in the meantime, you could get them to remove the bushes in the median up the hill? They make it virtually impossible to see oncoming traffic from that direction, which means you have to make the unprotected left turn based on a guess that there’s no traffic coming from that direction. Once you start making the turn, it’s too late to stop, as there’s nowhere to hide between the two directions of traffic, so you’d better hope and pray you guessed right.Another idea: Couldn’t they install a traffic signal just for that left turn, and synchronize it with lights at the intersections up and down the hill? It seems both of those lights could be programmed to be red in all directions for 30-60 seconds, creating a gap in traffic, whe...Latest news
