A retired D.C. lieutenant who fatally shot a trainee during an instructional exercise for library police officers last summer has been sentenced to three years behind bars.In June, 59-year-old Jesse Porter pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter while armed and unlawful discharge of a firearm in the death of 25-year-old Maurica Manyan at the Anacostia library in August 2022.The sentence handed down by Judge Anthony Epstein on Friday was the minimum under sentencing guidelines, sparking an angry, emotional outburst from members of Manyan’s family, many of whom gave wrenching victim-impact statements during Friday’s hearing.Prosecutors had asked for seven years.Earlier this year, Porter, a 33-year veteran of the D.C. police department, was indicted by a grand jury on a more serious charge of second-degree murder in Manyan’s death, but he was later offered a plea deal on the lesser offense — a move that was sharply criticized by the Manyan family. What happened in t...Noah Lyles wins 200-meter world title and looks to become a star at next year’s Olympics

Massachusetts’ highest court ruled that the state does have the authority to enforce its own securities standards for brokerages in a “landmark” decision that has some observers hoping reforms will soon follow.“I am pleased and gratified that the Court has ruled that our Fiduciary Rule is an appropriate exercise of my authority under the Massachusetts Uniform Securities Act,” Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin said following the Friday ruling by the Supreme Judicial Court.“This landmark decision affirms the fiduciary duty of brokers to their customers and vindicates the role of my Securities Division to principally, but aggressively protect investors and police broker-dealer misconduct,” he continued.Galvin in 2020 filed a complaint against Robinhood, which offers trading via its website and mobile apps, complaining of the platform’s gamification of trading by advising customers, the SJC summarizes, “without considering whether those recommendations were in each cust...X marks the spot: Trump returns to the former Twitter with a vengeance

And that’s of presstime Friday eve.In a savvy marketing move, Trump links to his website — donaldjtrump.com — where he leans into his arrest and booking “at the notoriously violent jail in Fulton County, Georgia” and asks for donations from $24 to $3,300.Trump has been posting exclusively on his TruthSocial platform and emailing like crazy for years but appears to be pivoting back to Elon Musk’s X social media platform — especially after his debate-night interview with Tucker Carlson.Musk even pinned his comment under Trump’s X post saying “approximately 10 million views per hour of this image.” He’s referring to Trump’s mug shot on the former president’s old haunt @realdonaldtrump...Clarke Schmidt’s dad flew Yankees to Tampa for Rays series: ‘It was awesome’

TAMPA — Delta Air Lines typically prefers that its pilots don’t interact with celebrity passengers too much on chartered flights.“You never want to have a pilot going up and saying, ‘Hey, can I get your autograph? Can I get this? Can I get that?’” Dwight Schmidt, a Delta pilot for 25 years, told the Daily News. “You don’t want to have those improprieties.”But the former Marine fighter pilot made an exception on Thursday when he flew the Yankees to Tampa for their series against the Rays. Dwight is the father of Clarke Schmidt, so most of the plane already recognized him before he boarded the aircraft.“It’s kind of a different dynamic because everybody knows me,” Dwight said. “I get on the airplane and everybody’s like, ‘Hey, Mr. Schmidt.’”Dwight actually flew the Yankees to Iowa for the Field of Dreams game in 2021, but his son was not on the major league roster at the time.“I...Shohei Ohtani seeking second opinion on elbow as he faces the Mets: ‘It sounds like he’ll continue to hit’

Mike Trout, however, will not be active this weekend when the Los Angeles Angels face the Mets in a three-game set at Citi Field. The Angels were dealt two big blows this week. Ohtani, their two-way superstar, tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in the first game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. The right-handed pitcher/DH is seeking a second opinion and alternative treatments that could help him avoid having to undergo his second Tommy John surgery since 2018.Then, outfielder Trout went back on the injured list only one game after being activated. The three-time AL MVP and one of the faces of baseball missed most of July and August to rehab from hamate bone surgery in his left hand. The New Jersey native has struggled to stay on the field in recent seasons and an Angels organization that has been marred by dysfunction and bad dra...Patriots top rookie Christian Gonzalez seemingly avoids serious injury

Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey, in “the first statement of its kind” in his tenure, is blasting internet trolls for spreading “baseless” theories in the Karen Read murder case.He issued a blistering video statement late Friday afternoon that challenges alternative theories in the case of Read, 43, of Mansfield, who is charged in Norfolk Superior Court with the murder of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe.Morrissey added “we try people in the court and not on the internet for a reason. The internet has no rules of evidence. The internet has no punishment for perjury. And the internet does not know all the facts.”He stressed that “the harassment of witnesses in the murder prosecution of Karen Read is absolutely baseless. It should be an outrage to any decent person — and it needs to stop. Innuendo is not evidence. False narratives are not evidence.“However, what evidence does show is that John O’Keefe never entered the home at 34 Fairview Road in Canton on ...Latest news
