Miss Manners: People say unpleasant things when we bring our kids to adult parties

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:30:01 GMT

DEAR MISS MANNERS: My wife and I got married five years ago and have two children. One is 3 and the other is 1½. We have many older friends whose children have grown up and moved out.We have been invited to parties at some of those friends’ houses, and, as we cannot really afford a sitter, we have brought our kids with us. This is usually received with comments such as, “I see you brought the little terrors with you.”I feel that this is a very rude thing to say. I do not know a polite way to respond that also clearly says that I love my children and do not appreciate them being insulted. How should I respond?GENTLE READER: Insulting your children is certainly rude, although Miss Manners notices you conveniently skipped over your own rudeness in bringing them where they were not invited. (Otherwise, why offer the justification of exorbitant child care costs?)There would be no need to respond had the original conversation gone something like: “I’m so sorr...

DEAR ABBY: Would it be wrong to tell my ex-husband’s girlfriend (whom he left me for) that he still tells me he loves me and can’t move on because of me?He says it no matter how many times I have told him I don’t ever want him back. He has also said he doesn’t plan to remarry, despite the fact that she wants to get married and is being led to believe he loves her and wants to marry her.(I have the text messages to prove it.)I don’t want her to be hurt like I was. She moved away from her family to be with him. She has no family here, but she has a great job, and he’s just using her for her money.I know I shouldn’t care, but I think she should know how he feels. I hate that he’s lying to her and using her.Should I send her the texts I have or leave well enough alone?WANTS TO WARN IN THE SOUTHRelated ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: Given how my marriage ended, what should I do with the ring? Italy must open up beach concessions, EU’s top court says

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:30:01 GMT

Italy can’t allow beach clubs to keep control of the sandy shore until 2033, the European Union’s top court ruled on Thursday. While Italy’s seafront is public property, large parts of beaches are dotted with umbrellas, sunbeds and restaurants managed by private beach businesses that strike concessions with local authorities. Italian lawmakers in 2020 allowed these contracts run until 2033.The Court of Justice said that can’t happen. Beach concessions “cannot be renewed automatically” and must face “an impartial and transparent selection procedure,” judges said in a ruling that sets out EU law for an Italian court handling a dispute between the country’s competition authority and the town of Ginosa.Beaches are a hot political issue in Italy, sparking clashes last year within the coalition government led by former Prime Minister Mario Draghi who had only wanted to extend the concessions until the end of 2023.National courts and loc...

NATO chief makes first wartime visit to Kyiv

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 15:30:01 GMT

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg is in Ukraine on Thursday, a NATO official confirmed, visiting the country for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. The surprise trip, coming more than a year after the war began, is highly sensitive and arrives at a time when Ukrainian officials are pushing the Western military alliance to give Kyiv a clearer path to membership. Ukraine’s government formally requested “accelerated accession” to join NATO in September last year. But while NATO promised in 2008 that Ukraine will eventually become a member, most allies — including the U.S. — have been wary of creating a concrete pathway to the alliance for Kyiv while war rages on. The issue has fueled frustration and disagreements within the alliance. While all allies agree Ukraine cannot become part of NATO right now, some Eastern flank members are pushing for the alliance to give Kyiv at least a symbolic gesture that it is moving closer to NATO. The debate w...

With his size, length and athleticism, he should develop into a starter on the left side.In the long run, he might turn out to be the best tackle in the class given that upside. His ceiling is off the charts.A former basketball player in high school, Jones moves incredibly well for a big man. He’s already a destroyer as a run blocker.Darne...
