A “steak” dinner with vegetarians in mind By David Tanis, The New York TimesAfter the long, gray winter, outside is where I want to be more and more. And somehow all I want to eat is vegetables, perhaps as a kind of tonic. If your climate allows, this light, sunny menu is really more of a daylight meal, relaxed and best eaten outdoors (though, this year, it’s anyone’s guess what surprising things the weather might do).Salad, made with ingredients of the season, is a necessity for me all year round. What I want right now is a salad of just-picked tender greens with colorful radishes, sweet raw young turnips, roasted beets, asparagus tips, shavings of fennel and fresh herbs. The idea for this delicate, appealing first course is to have an assortment of complementary greens, herbs and vegetables, artfully arranged on a platter or individual plates, dribbled with a tangy vinaigrette. Feel free to improvise: A few spinach leaves, a hand...

Prince Harry’s big concern with memoir: Being seen as smart, ghostwriter says

Prince Harry’s big concern with memoir: Being seen as smart, ghostwriter says In a fascinating new essay for the New Yorker, Prince Harry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning ghostwriter J.R. Moehringer opens up about a particularly combative scene between the two during the mostly friendly, but often intense two-year process of writing and editing the Duke of Sussex’s best-selling memoir, “Spare.”The scene revealed something essential about Harry’s insecurities and motivations for writing the book, according to Moehringer’s essay: Harry wants to be taking seriously, he wants to be seen as “smart.”Harry thought he could do this by proving he had his “wits” about him during a particularly grueling moment in his life — in January 2012, when he, a British army captain, underwent a brutal military exercise before his second deployment to Afghanistan. As described in “Spare” and Moehringer’s essay, Harry was “captured” by pretend terrorists in a simulation to find out if he had the...

Black history, minstrel themes, collide in 2 S.F. productions Titles don’t get much more provocative than that of Marc Anthony Thompson’s new show at San Francisco’s Magic Theatre, “The Ni¿¿er Lovers.”“I wanted to record all the people that called to get tickets at the theater to hear how they solved their dilemma to say the N-word,” says writer-composer-director Thompson. “But the emphasis is really on ‘Lovers.’ This play is really a celebration of a really great journey, and a really great love story.”It’s loosely inspired by the true story of Ellen and William Craft, an enslaved couple who escaped from Georgia to Boston in 1848. Light-skinned Ellen disguised herself as a white man for the journey, while her darker-skinned husband posed as her enslaved valet. (A book about them, Ilyon Woo’s “Master Slave Husband Wife,” came out a few months ago.)“I’ve been reticent to actually draw that connection myself, because we’ve taken just the kernel of that story, and we use it as a jumping-off point to talk about gender, race then, race ...

Downtown San Jose food hall gets big new signs as stealth project proceeds SAN JOSE — “Downtown Food Hall” signs have sprouted for the first time on the sides of a historic San Jose building, fresh indicators of progress for a stealth real estate project being crafted by an Uber co-founder.Even as the signs adorn the former Odd Fellows Building near the corner of East Santa Clara Street and South Third Street in downtown San Jose, glimpses inside the building reveal ongoing work by contractors behind covers that largely block views through the big windows in the old structure. From time to time in recent days and months, construction workers have been spotted walking in and out of side doors and alleyways leading to the interior of the historic building.During times when gaps appeared in the coverings, stainless steel cooking and washing stations were visible through the windows. For the most part, however, the construction remains clandestine and hidden from view.About a month ago, DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats logos suddenly appeared o...
