(The Hill) - There have been 21 federal government shutdowns in the last five decades, as Congress has until September 30th to pass a set of spending bills or come up with a short-term plan to avert a soon-to-be 22nd government shutdown. A government shutdown would lead to non-essential federal functions such as social security and SNAP benefits to be suspended and result in millions of federal employees to not receive pay during the shutdown. The soon-to-be approaching deadline has lead to division between the House Republicans. Multiple GOP factions in the chamber have different demands, with some GOP House members even threatening to call for a vote to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his leadership position. Here are the 21 times the federal government has experienced a shutdown. Year: 2019 President: Donald Trump The most recent federal government shutdown lasted for 35 days from December 2018 to January 2019, the longest shutdown per...Oak Park Heights picks new city administrator from Illinois

I'm currently dating a woman who I really like. We've been together almost a year now. But she kisses her guy friends on the mouth hello and goodbye. I'm 46 and have never experienced this before. It isn't her culture, she's from Iowa. I let her know that's a hard boundary for me. It's hard because I don't want to be a controlling guy, but I don't like it. She does do it with girls too, and I think it's odd, but that doesn't bother me as much. I realize that may seem unfair, but I'm just being honest. Am I insecure? Maybe? She told me she would try, but she's done it forever. Well, it's been 2-months, and she hasn't slowed down at all. It seems like she doesn't care about my feelings. I'd like to think if she told me something wa...5 things to know this Monday, September 25

Published Fri, 27 Dec 2024 05:39:08 GMT
Dear Amy: My 82-year-old mother has an undiagnosed mental illness, marked by narcissism, paranoia, delusions, and abusive rages.Beginning in my teens (I’m in my 50s now), she has caused long periods of estrangement over perceived slights, so she missed my wedding and the births of my children. My father divorced her when I was eight years old.And yet she also has better periods when she can be lovely and charming, and so whenever she called me to reconcile, I always did.Throughout the pandemic, I visited her regularly, took her to her many doctor’s appointments, and helped her through other major problems. I did this because she has no one else — literally zero friends or other family willing to talk with or help her.But then last year, because I failed to return her call during the single hour I was in church for a special Mother’s Day service (oh, the irony), she left me more than a half-dozen increasingly hostile and abusive voicemails.I called her back and told her that we ...Commission fines defence company €1.2 million in cartel settlement

The European Commission has fined defence company Diehl €1.2 million for participating in a cartel concerning the sale of military hand grenades together with its rival RUAG. Both companies admitted their involvement in the cartel and agreed to settle the case. RUAG was not fined as it revealed the cartel to the Commission under the leniency programme. The product concerned by the cartel is military hand grenades. The Commission investigation revealed that the two manufacturers split national markets across the European Economic Area (‘EEA') between themselves during almost 14 years. Following this allocation, only the designated manufacturer was entitled to sell military hand grenades in its allocated territory unless the other party gave its consent. Both companies cooperated with the Commission under the leniency programme (2006 Leniency Notice): RUAG received full immunity for revealing the cartel, thereby avoiding a fine of ca. € 2.5 million, while and Diehl benefited from a 50% ...Word Game: Sept. 25, 2023
