Meet David Cameron’s Indo-Pacific fixer: an ex-MEP known for championing Beijing

LONDON — As Westminster debated the wisdom — or otherwise — of David Cameron’s return to frontline politics this week, one former colleague was in no doubt.“Cameron is in the right place at the right time,” wrote former Tory MEP Nirj Deva of the new U.K. foreign secretary. “There are very few if any international leaders who could lead on so many fronts with knowledge, deep relationships and meticulous attention to detail.”Deva’s glowing appraisal was hardly surprising. The pair are friendly — and picture after picture shows him and Cameron together at events around the world. But Cameron’s association with the ex-MEP raises further questions about his own past involvement with Chinese investment projects which could cause a conflict with Britain’s core strategic interests.During a 20-year career in Brussels, Deva was well known for building links with China, even founding an EU-China friendship group that was later wound up after conce...The rise and fall of geopolitical Europe

Her latest book, “A Green and Global Europe,” is out with Polity. As the European Union’s leadership enters its last lap, with the European Parliament elections scheduled for 2024, it’s worth reflecting on the bloc’s global role and the lessons to be drawn from the wars and crises of the last four years. So, against the backdrop of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s ambition of a “geopolitical Commission,” announced at the beginning of her term, how is global Europe actually faring?Let’s begin, for once, with the good news: Europe’s policy toward Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has featured all the elements of a successful foreign policy.Of course, this doesn’t mean Europe will necessarily succeed in its goals or that Ukraine will win its existential battle of survival against imperia...Ten more years: Emmanuel Macron’s broken glyphosate promise

In 2017, President Emmanuel Macron ignited the hopes of environmentalists and health advocates when he vowed that France would ban the controversial herbicide glyphosate within three years.“I have asked the government to take the necessary steps to ban the use of glyphosate in France as soon as alternatives are found, and within three years at the latest,” he said at the time. The French leader’s announcement followed a bitter political battle in the European Union, which saw the world’s most widely used pesticide re-approved for use by farmers in the bloc amid concerns that it is both carcinogenic and harmful to biodiversity.Pressured by the European Parliament and influential agricultural powerhouses France, Germany, and Italy, EU countries reluctantly reached a compromise to extend the authorization by five years — shorter than the typical 10- to 15-year approval period for agricultural chemicals. The license was extended for another 12 months last December...Tractor-trailer rollover causes serious injuries, prompts lane closures in Grafton

A Boston Marathon bombing survivor who spent more than three years in and out of medical facilities is now launching a new organization to help others in similar situations. Marc Fucarile wants to be a lifeline for those who receive life-altering news. As he continues his work, he recently spoke to 7NEWS.“You’ll be able to talk to people who are living the same experiences you are about to have,” Fucarile said of the MARC Network, his new mobility awareness resource community.Fucarile lost his leg on the day of the marathon bombing more than 10 years ago. When he regained consciousness in the hospital, as grateful as he was to be alive, he didn’t know what was next for him. Neither did the loved ones by his bedside.“After surgery, and surgery, and surgery every day, yeah, I didn’t know what my life was going to look like moving forward,” he said. “My family was terrified.”“I had a five-year-old boy,” he continued. “I was scared.” After 3.5 years in and out of medical facili...Concord-Carlisle punches its ticket to the Division 1 boys soccer final

LYNN — If you told Concord-Carlisle boys soccer coach Ray Pavlik his team was going to be undefeated and having a chance to play for a Division 1 state title this season, he probably wouldn’t have believed it.Yet that’s exactly what the Patriots are going to do on Saturday at Walpole High. The top-seeded Patriots controlled their state semifinal against No. 5 Weymouth for most of the 80 minutes on Wednesday as Sean Fernandez-Davila had a pair of penalty kick goals in a 3-1 win at Manning Field.“Sean has been our go-to guy in those situations all season,” Pavlik said. “He showed a lot of poise and finished with two real quality shots.”The Patriots (19-0-1) set the tone almost from the opening kick as they swarmed around Weymouth goalie Bo Carley’s net. The pressure resulted in a takedown in the box in the seventh minute and a penalty kick.Fernandez-Davila calmly stepped to the spot and drilled a shot low inside the post for a 1-0 lead. The Wildcats, who were in the semifinals for a sec...Al Horford’s huge night propels shorthanded Celtics over 76ers for fourth straight win

Al Horford has not been as impactful as usual to start this season. For the first time in his career, the veteran big man accepted a bench role among a talented roster. He has played fewer minutes. Through the Celtics’ first 10 games, he was slumping from 3-point range. But with the Celtics shorthanded for the first time this season, they needed Horford – among others – to step up. The 37-year-old proceeded to turn back the clock again. With Jaylen Brown and Kristaps Porzingis both out for the first time this season, Horford slid back into the starting lineup and had his best game of the season. Down two starters, Horford and the rest of his teammates stepped up. The Celtics received contributions from everywhere on the roster as they figured out a way to leave Philadelphia with a win, avenging last week’s loss to the 76ers with a 117-107 victory on Wednesday night.Jayson Tatum led the way with 29 points as the Celtics won their fourth consecutive game. But it wouldn’t have been possi...Defending champ Newton North returns to Div. 1 state final

NEWTON – For the third consecutive season, the Newton North girls volleyball team is heading to the Division 1 state championship. The No. 1 Tigers (24-1) swept No. 5 Needham (17-4) 3-0 to advance to the title game and get the chance to win the state championship for the second straight year.“It feels great,” Tigers coach Nile Fox said. “We work hard for this all year. We always want to make it to the last game of the season, so it feels great because the girls worked hard. This is us getting the fruits of our labor.”Newton North won the opening two points, which Fox said was huge as the team emphasized strong starts to sets in preparation of the matchup.“(Starting strong) is something we have been talking about the last couple of days,” Fox said. “During the whole playoff run we have been starting slow, so we really wanted to come in and start off strong. That’s been our focal point at practice because we know Needham is a great team and if we started slow it could bring trouble fo...Justin Fields has 7 games to prove himself to the Chicago Bears — but ‘it just starts with Sunday,’ the QB says

Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields isn’t focused on proving himself over the final seven games of the season — though it will be necessary to do that as team leadership charts its future.Fields’ purpose is narrower as he prepares to make his first start in more than a month Sunday against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.“Just go out there and win games,” Fields said Wednesday after practice at Halas Hall. “I’m not here to prove anything to anybody. I’m playing for my teammates, I’m playing for the coaches and that’s it. Everything else will take care of itself.“So I’m not necessarily trying to prove anything to anybody. Just go out there with my brothers and perform.”Bears coach Matt Eberflus announced before practice that the Bears plan to start Fields on Sunday, saying Fields is “progressing well” from the dislocated right thumb that kept him out of four games.Fields practiced in full We...Terminal One nearly halfway to takeoff, structural steel construction now complete

SAN DIEGO -- San Diego International Airport’s new Terminal One is nearly halfway to takeoff. Airport officials confirmed the new terminal is about 40% done.“We’re about 40% of the way there already, still have two years to go, but seeing the structure rise from the ground and getting a good sense of what it’s going to look like is very exciting,” said Gill Cabrera, chair of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority Board of Directors. To commemorate the milestone of completing the construction on the structural steel, airport and city leaders signed the last steel beam.“Tradition in the construction industry is to have everyone involved in the process, sign the last beam and at some point later, hoist it up and it will be the last structural beam,” Cabrera said.Construction began in 2021 on the $3.4 billion project. The new terminal will have 30 gates, 19 of them are expected to open in summer 2025, which will complete the first phase. Then, the old terminal will be demolished...Latest news
