TROPICAL TROUBLE FOR SOUTH FLORIDA?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 16:01:02 GMT

Happy Thursday, South Florida!Hopefully everyone has had a nice week so far. Breezy conditions all week long have helped temperatures remain in check and near average.  This is a very different weather pattern than what South Florida has been experiencing all summer long. Today South Florida did see some changes though. Slightly lighter wind speeds allowed our afternoon high temperatures to reach into the mid 90s for some. This left us a few degrees above average for the first time in almost a week. And while a few showers moved into our area late in the day, overall it was a nice summer afternoon for South Florida. Tonight South Florida can still expect a few showers & isolated thunderstorms through this evening before turning quiet late tonight. After seeing a few more showers in the forecast today, drier air is forecast to move in once again, decreasing our rain chances for the end of the week and keeping a typical summer-like weather pattern for South Florida for the upcomi...

As afternoon passed into evening, demonstrators for and against Trump milled around outside the jail. There were more Trump supporters than opponents braving the Georgia summer heat, but the entire group was outnumbered by media near the Rice Street entrance to the jail, which was locked down tight. As word spread that Trump was on his way to Atlanta, demonstrators lined security barricades outside the entrance, with people two to three deep trying to get a good view. Fulton County sheriff’s deputies blocked one end of the block outside the jail’s back entrance with an empty prisoner bus, while a county dump truck blocked the other ...

Fox News reaches 12.8 million viewers for GOP primary debate, despite Donald Trump’s absence.

By DAVID BAUDER (AP Media Writer)NEW YORK (AP) — Even without lead contender Donald Trump, an estimated 12.8 million people watched the first Republican presidential primary debate on two Fox News television channels and its streaming service. There seemed little evidence that Trump’s attempt to counterprogram the debate, by appearing in an online interview with Tucker Carlson at about the same time on Wednesday, appreciably affected the number of people who were interested in checking out the eight alternatives. The viewership was a little more than half the 24 million people who watched Trump appear in his first presidential debate in August 2015, the Nielsen company said. But it outpaced a January 2016 GOP candidates debate on Fox that Trump also skipped and was seen by 12.5 million peopleTelevision is a vastly different world than it was eight years ago, with streaming more established and thousands of cable customers cutting the cord. By ERIC TUCKER, KATE BRUMBACK and JILL COLVIN (Associated Press)ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump was set to turn himself in Thursday night to authorities in Georgia on charges that he illegally schemed to overturn the 2020 election in that state, a county jail booking expected to yield a historic first: a mug shot of a former American president.Trump’s surrender, coming amid an abrupt shake-up of his legal team, follows the presidential debate in Milwaukee the night before featuring his leading rivals for the 2024 Republican nomination — a contest in which he remains the leading candidate despite broad legal troubles. His presence in Georgia, though likely brief, is swiping the spotlight anew from his opponents after the debate in which they sought to seize on his absence to elevate their own presidential prospects. The Fulton County prosecution is the fourth criminal case against Trump since March, when he became the first former president in U.S. history to be indicted...

What does the record rainfall Hilary dumped on CA mean for wildfire risk?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 16:01:02 GMT

SAN DIEGO -- Yet another deluge was dropped on Southern California this year as Tropical Storm Hilary moved through the region over the weekend. While the storm broke rainfall records for this time of year in some parts, experts say the rainfall might not have much impact on local wildfire risk moving into the peak of the season. After Sunday's downpour, Cal Fire officials said the potential for fires might ease slightly in the short-term as vegetation responds to the added moisture. But, they are still expecting wildfire season to proceed as normal moving into the state's driest and most fire-prone months. PHOTOS: Tropical Storm Hilary moves through San Diego "As of right now, it's kind of a near-normal September and October," Cal Fire Public Information Officer Matthew Cornette told FOX5SanDiego.com. "The rain could help slow down the fires a little bit until the fuels dry out again and then we'll be back to where we were before the storm."According to Cal Fire, California's hydr...
