School shootings are a real threat — so these students invented a technology to fight back

Rebecca Wang was just 7 years old the first time it happened. She remembers vividly her teacher’s panicked face, and her urgent voice telling Rebecca and her classmates to keep quiet, hide behind their desks and stay calm. They were barricaded in a Northern California classroom for four hours until police found the man who’d run across their campus with a gun. Wang didn’t understand what was going on, but when they finally walked outside, her entire family was waiting — and they looked terrified.“It was pure chaos,” said Wang, now 17. “We didn’t really know what was going on, but we knew the teachers were scared out of their minds.”After 10 years of waiting for things to change, Wang — a rising senior at San Jose’s Gunderson High — decided to take things into her own hands. This summer, she and three friends will be refining SIREN, an artificial intelligence device they’ve trained to detect gunshots and instantly communicate with all students, staff members and teachers at an affected...Chicago Bears Q&A: What are some key matchups to watch?

The Chicago Bears wrapped up their third week of organized team activities ahead of mandatory minicamp next week. What matchups should we be watching? And will the Bears finally sign an edge rusher? Brad Biggs addresses concerns in his weekly mailbag. What are some key matchups we should be paying attention to in minicamp and training camp? — @just_acyI don’t know that there are a lot of matchups that are super intriguing at training camp. Obviously you want to see how wide receiver DJ Moore performs when the pads come on and he’s competing against cornerbacks. I am talking specifically about work where it is starters versus starters. Moore facing the second-team cornerbacks doesn’t generate a ton of intrigue for me. It would be concerning (from an offensive standpoint, anyway) if the current group of edge rushers had a ton of success against the starting offensive tackles.Maybe more interesting will be the few battles for starting spots. I don’t know if it’s surprising how many firs...Free summer concerts in the Capital Region

Nobody plays an entire NFL schedule entirely unscathed, so when Jonas Griffith started to feel a sharp pain in his foot last October, he figured an upcoming bye week was arriving at just the right time. The Broncos inside linebacker played 36 snaps in a 21-17 win in London against Jacksonville through the pain and planned on managing it the rest of the season.“I knew something was going on, because every time I took a step – it happened in London – and every time I took a step I was feeling this sharp pain,” Griffith told The Post recently. “I knew it wasn’t a regular muscle strain or something like that, that it had something to do with a bone, but I didn’t think it was a season-ender.”Turns out, it was.The pain didn’t subside through 13 snaps of action against Tennessee after the bye and then only worsened in practice the following week. The cause: A broken bone at the top of his foot. Griffith landed on injured reserve and missed the rest of the season. He said he wasn’t allowed to...Broadway’s Denée Benton calls Ron DeSantis ‘grand wizard’ on Tony Awards broadcast

A Denver jury has found a 43-year-old man guilty of murder in the 2021 fatal shooting in Northeast Park Hill. After a five-day trial, jurors on Friday found Warren Simpson guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of 54-year-old Robert Turner. Police in October 2021 found Turner in an alley behind 3683 N. Monaco St. and paramedics saw he’d been shot once in the upper chest and he was pronounced dead.Denver police investigators obtained video surveillance that showed two cars pulling into the alley. On the videotape, a male voice can be heard ordering a person to get out of the car, followed by the sound of one gunshot. A second voice can be heard on the video saying, “Mama!”Denver district attorney prosecutors proved that Simpson ordered Turner to get out of the car and that Turner called out “Mama” before Simpson shot and killed him. The sentencing is scheduled for July 20.Latest news
