Twins officials floated the possibility a few weeks back of Saints starting pitcher Louie Varland rejoining the Twins in September as a member of their bullpen. On the last day of August the move all but became a reality.Varland was scratched from his scheduled start for the Saints on Thursday at CHS Field and instead pitched out of the bullpen in the Saints’ 10-inning, 8-7 win over Columbus.Varland entered the game in the top of the third inning with the Saints trailing 4-0. He pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Afterward, he said he has not heard anything from Twins management about his situation and at this point considers himself to be “starter depth” in case someone gets hurt.He did say, however, that he has known for about a week and a half that they wanted him to pitch out of the bullpen for the Saints this week. Asked why he thought they wanted to make that change, he said, “For bullpen experience. In case, maybe.”Varland said he ha...High school football: Lakeville North uses experience to its advantage in 35-14 win over Stillwater

A year ago, Lakeville North junior Riley Grossman was the less experienced quarterback on the field when his team traveled to Stillwater High School and fell to current Minnesota Gopher Max Shikenjanski and the Ponies in the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.Thursday night, though, the roles were reversed. This time, it was Grossman and the Panthers who had the veteran edge, and that proved the difference in a 35-14 season-opening win at Pony Stadium.“I’m trusting in my guys and I feel a lot more confident,” said Grossman, who finished 11 of 14 passing for 148 yards and three touchdown passes as he entered his third season as Lakeville North’s starting quarterback. “It just seemed like everything was clicking tonight.”It helped that the Panthers had a big game on the ground — led by senior Sawyer Wilkie, who finished with 145 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries.“Honestly, it’s been a while since we’ve had something like that going,” said Wilkie, whose team finished 4-6 i...High school football: East Ridge’s balanced offensive approach leads Raptors past Park

Tanner Zolnosky may be the metro’s premier quarterback this fall. The East Ridge senior signal caller showed why Thursday with an efficient aerial performance. But East Ridge also flashed its balance, with a physical, multi-faceted running game that could round out the offense and make the Raptors a true threat in Class 6A this season.East Ridge’s offense moved the ball generally at will in its season-opening 40-21 victory over Park at TCO Stadium.Zolnosky threw for 173 yards and a pair of scores, while Isaac Walker punched in a couple touchdowns on the ground.Thursday marked the renewal of a rivalry on the gridiron, as the District 833 foes squared off in football for the first time since 2014.The score of that 2014 bout was 49-0 Raptors. Thursday’s game was far more competitive. Park’s up-tempo offense gashed the Raptors on a couple first half drives and Park’s Bryan Wright picked off Zolnosky twice on deep ball attempts. The Gophers football team had one last chance to salvage the season opener against Nebraska on Thursday. On fourth and 10 with two minutes left, Gophers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis heaved a pass into the corner of the end zone; receiver Daniel Jackson caught it and somehow dragged his back foot in bounds for the game-tying touchdown. The Gophers were a seven-point betting favorite but couldn’t muster a single touchdown until the game was on the line.On the next drive, Gophers star safety Tyler Nubin intercepted Jeff Sims with a minute remaining. A short drive set up new placekicker Dragan Kesich for a 47-yard game-winning field goal to seal a 13-10 win for the Gophers.Kesich was making his first start as the Gophers placekicker Thursday, and the moment was not too big for him.“He’s made himself into a really good, solid, reliable kicker,” head coach P.J. Fleck said last week. “Now he’s got to go out there and prove it to himself, that he is exactly who he say...Albany residents wake to bat in home, rabies concern

ST. LOUIS – The City of St. Louis has a stop sign issue.FOX 2 has confirmed the city used cardboard-like stop signs as replacements for damaged or stolen signs made of sturdier metal or fiberglass for a short period last year. Hundreds of the flimsy, cardboard-like signs remain in use and are failing. From yield signs and one-way signs to school zone and no parking signs, residents say stop signs are perhaps the most important of all.“I ride my little scooter every day, and I depend on stop signs, yield, bicycle (signs),” Laura Henson, Soulard resident, said. “If you can’t see them, and they’re not going to last, what’s the point? That’s very cheesy, very cheesy. I mean, my gosh!”Residents wonder what the point of stop signs that appear to be made of cardboard is.Alderwoman Cara Spencer (Ward 8) says it’s unacceptable.“It is not an appropriate material for a stop sign,” she said. The flimsier signs now seem to be falling apart across the city.
